Some concepts in biology can be difficult and as with all A level courses students will be expected apply their knowledge to novel situations. Students with an environmental background can find biochemistry challenging whilst statistical tests may prove demanding for those with a poor grasp of maths. The new biology specifications now require a working knowledge some GCSE mathematical skills. In particular, Paper 3 includes a number of calculation problems. Practice is often the key to gaining confidence with this type of question.

Many students frequently have a good understanding of topics but loose marks through incorrect usage of terminology. The A level biology exam boards require very specific definitions and descriptions of processes and a failure to apply the correct criteria will lead to the shedding of marks and grade slippage. Understanding exactly what the question is asking is a particular issue. Question practice from past papers is essential to hone the techniques required to produce model answers.

The incorporation of an essay has proved challenging as many students can attain a reasonable mark but achieving a top grade requires both depth and detail together with including as many appropriate examples as possible from the course and wider reading. It is very easy to drift away from question asked and incorporate irrelevant content which will not gain marks. Learning how to create essay plans in the short time available during the exam is an important skill which a tutor can help the student develop.
